The Met Gala calls for all celebrity guests to bring their most to the table. But as we’ve seen from the last decade and a half, none command our attention more than Rihanna. From her 2015 canary yellow train by Guo Pei to her 2021 debut with A$AP Rocky in a voluminous Balenciaga gown, the singer is on a whole other level.
So with the 2023 event right around the corner, our eyes have been firmly glued to Rihanna for any clues as to what—and who—she’ll be wearing. And while the 35-year-old is notoriously clever with keeping her cards close to her chest, an outfit from a recent night out may have given us a strong hint about what she may have in store.
While in Paris with partner A$AP Rocky, the pregnant starlet dined at César, a chic restaurant right off the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Never missing an opportunity to show off her personal style, Rihanna opted for a muted grey look consisting of a crop top that showed off her growing belly, and a pair of low-slung cargo pants by Marni. She accessorised with matching grey pointed boots and a diamond choker necklace.
Upon first glance, the look may not give too much away, but the proof is in the pudding—or coat, in this case. Layered over her outfit was an ankle-grazing hooded patchwork coat from the Fendi fall/winter 1999 collection, designed by Karl Lagerfeld.
As this year’s Met Gala theme will serve as a tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, who oversaw the creative direction for Chanel and Fendi for decades, the possibility of Rihanna sourcing vintage Fendi for her red carpet look seems pretty high. Particularly given that the songstress has long been a fan of the luxury house.
Marking her tenth appearance at the pinnacle event of every fashion calendar, the outfits at 2023’s Met Gala will surely be a feast for our eyes. It will be co-chaired by Wintour, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Andrew Bolton, The Met Museum’s Costume Center curator.
